Here is a pictorial summary
of RV travels during August and September 2002 in NM, UT and AZ. I
think we visited 8 National Parks and 2 State Parks. We hiked almost
everywhere. In
addition to visiting the parks, we took an all-day raft ride down the San
Juan River. See the Arizona web page for more.
Chaco Canyon National Park, Anasazi Ruins (in NM, as we traveled to Utah).
Picture is taken from the cliff above this largest ruin, called Pueblo
Bonito which once included 800 rooms and 16 round kivas (thought to be community
ceremonial rooms).
4 Corners of CO, NM, UT, AZ. Only place in US where 4 states
come together in a single point, which happens to be on Navajo land, so the
tribe charges admission for the privilege of standing on the spot.
Hovenweep National Monument. These ruins are towers rather
than dwellings in cliffs like at Mesa Verde or the one-story ruins in Chaco.
Arches National Park. Beautiful double arch.
Natural Bridges National Monument. Owachomo Bridge.
Highway to Monument Valley. We didn't take the motor coach
on this gravel road that drops from the top of the mesa into Monument Valley
with many switchbacks.
Mittens
in Monument Valley, which straddles the border of UT and AZ. The valley
has been used for many movie sets, including lots of John Wayne movies.
Capitol Reef National Park. Named because huge rock formations
look like capitol buildings.
Bryce
Canyon. Most beautiful of all.
Hike among Bryce Hoodoos. Notice the switchbacks as people
hike down to the base of the massive hoodoo formations of Bryce Canyon.
Zion National Park. Climbers work their way up the massive
sandstone cliffs of Zion.
