Athabasca Glacier
Hikers Millhole
Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park
Alberta, Canada

The Athabasca Glacier comes out of the massive Columbia Icefield. This picture was taken from the Visitors' Center, across the highway. Note the cars parked by the lake near the bottom of the photo to get perspective. Special busses with large tires take thousands of tourists each day onto a groomed section on the left side of the glacier.

Guided hikes are also conducted on the glacier; Tom and I opted for the hike, conducted by Peter Lemieux (in yellow jacket) of Athabasca Glacier Icewalks (iceman@icewalks.com). Here we get instructions before we go onto the ice. This is one of several millwells (ice holes) going deep into the ice. Note the bright blue color, which is the only color of the spectrum visible due to the dense light rays. The black "dirt" on the ice is rock fragments moved by the glacier.
